What Does Tajweed or Tarteel Mean?

Tarteel refers to “recitation” and is mentioned in the Quran in Surah Al-Muzammil, verse 4, where Allah instructs:

“And recite the Quran in slow, measured rhythmic tones.”

The term tarteel describes the rules for reciting the Quran as taught by Angel Jibreel (AS) to the Prophet Muhammad (SAWS).

Tajweed, meaning “to improve” or “beautify,” involves reciting the Quran with a focus on perfecting pronunciation and adhering to the rules of tarteel. While tarteel is used in prayer for measured recitation, tajweed involves applying the principles of tarteel in a slower and more detailed manner. Therefore, one must first learn tarteel to fully understand and practice tajweed.

• Ability to read words and sentences from the Mus’haf accurately
• Familiarity with basic Tajweed rules to ensure proper pronunciation during recitation
• Confidence in reading aloud from the Mus’haf
• Capability to apply and explain Tajweed rules in Quran recitation sessions
